HOLMESBURG Holmesburg is named for William Penn’s surveyor, Thomas Holmes. Holme's recommendation for the location of Penn’s ‘greene country towne’ was where the Pennypack Creek flowed into the Delaware River. Penn chose to build further down river and gave title to Holmes for this site for his own estate.
